Staying at a hotel can be quite expensive. As long as you are paying for your room, you may as well try to get as much as you can for your money. Most major hotel chains are more than happy to go above and beyond to accommodate their guests. In a lot of cases, this means providing them with free perks or upgrades. If you want to get in on the action, try using these tips:
- Let the front desk know if you are celebrating a special occasion. Most hotels have gifts or free services available to help people celebrate everything from anniversaries and honeymoons to birthdays. For instance, they may give you a complimentary bottle of champagne in your room or they may provide you with a slice of birthday cake. Alternatively, they may be willing to upgrade you to a better room.
- Ask for extra toiletries. The majority of hotels provide basic toiletries to their guests. In your room, you can usually find soap and shampoo. A lot of times, however, hotels have other types of toiletries available at the front desk. For instance, if you forget your toothpaste, you most likely can get a small tube from the front desk. You never know until you ask.
- Reserve your room directly with the hotel rather than through a booking site. When you call the hotel directly, you have a chance to negotiate with the person on the other end of the phone. If you are staying at the hotel during a slow time or if you are booking your room at the last minute, you may be able to get upgrades for free or they may be willing to offer you a lower price. You also may be able to request extra perks like a room with a view. This is another instance where it pays to ask. The worst thing that can happen is that they will say no.
- Join the hotel loyalty program. Joining the loyalty program of the hotel will usually give you access to an instant discount on your room. More than that, however, you may be able to earn free nights or other perks after staying at that particular hotel for a certain number of nights.
